Welcome to Newcomers

If you have just moved to Campbell River, or even if you have been living here for a few years, join us for a meeting of the Campbell River Women's Newcomers' Club.
Our social events provide an informal and relaxed atmosphere as you mingle and become acquainted with other new community members.
We meet on the first Tuesday of the month from September to November, and January to May at Ironwood Place, 1351 Ironwood St. The day and venue for December and June meetings will be chosen by the membership. We also have several other gatherings during any given month.

Activities
Many of our Newcomer membership pursue activities with others who may share common interests. Some activities include spouses and family members. There are a wide variety of social activities in which you may chose to participate. Some examples of our past or present activities are:

☺Book group, bowling bunch, mahjongg
☺Walking / Hiking Groups
☺Craft Activities
☺Garden tours
☺Theater and cinema outings

We are always open to new ideas.

Meetings & Members
Members are of all ages and come from all walks of life, but we all enjoy meeting others to pursue common interests or just to have a chat and share laughter. Our meetings often include a guest speaker who is an expert in an areas of interest to our membership. Team Newcomers had a fun time at the B.C. Paramedics Trivia night. We ended up with a good score thanks to our team captain Marcia.

Christmas Dinner 2010 at The Royal Coachman Restaurant

A wonderful evening was had by everyone who attended the Christmas Dinner at The Royal Coachman. A terrific turkey dinner with all the trimmings was served with so many desserts to choose from. Thank You to all the members that donated toiletries to the Women’s Centre.

Even though it was a dull rainy day, everyone had a good time at Sybil Andrews Cottage for our annual Pot Luck Supper. We were able to sit outside for awhile then decided to go inside to eat all the delicious dishes everyone brought.

A good turnout of members and hubbies at The Royal Coachman 2 for 1 steak night. Great food, drinks, people and of course great fun. Everyone had a good time with lots of laughter. What better way to spend a cold, rainy winter evening!

SPCA Walk Sept. 2009

Newcomers Team Jan, Bev (with canine companion Mickey) and Jayne at the SPCA walk on a rainy day in September. We raised just over $200.00 for the SPCA Paws for a Cause. A lot of people with their dogs came out in support. Next year we hope to raise more for the animals.

Our New Home – Ironwood Place

There will be a change in our General Meeting place starting in September from the Campbell River Community Center to The Ironwood Place (seniors center). It is across the street from "The Common Mall". (address at bottom). You can park in The Common's parking lot in front of Dollarama at the end of the parking lot and walk across Ironwood Street. Walk in the front door of the center on Ironwood and then turn left as soon as you walk in. If you are unsure where the center is or if you want to know more about it, please call Jan at 250-923-4858.

We are planning an exciting year with some new ideas and hope that you will be returning to Newcomers. See you there.

July 1st parade - Newcomers

Campbell River celebrates Canada Day in a big way, and one of the more popular events is the city’s Canada Day Parade. Last year, our Campbell River Women’s Newcomers Club had a group walking with the banner in the parade to let everyone know about us. This year we braved our first float. Supporting the Spirit of the River theme, we used recycled sheeting which we tie dyed to look like water and rocks and we had Club members dressed as a fisherwoman, kayakers, a gal ready for the beach, and a hiker handing out candy. We had fun celebrating Canada Day while decorating the float and after the parade was over. It was truly a team effort.

Many thanks to Brian Leeming of Brymik Earthworks (2401 N. Isl. Hwy), for generously and patiently agreeing to use his truck and trailer to pull our float. Also, thanks to the C. R. Arts Council for lending us materials for props.

Thanks to the many members who supported this project including all those who donated sheets and helped with the tie dying in June at Vi Campbell’s place. On July 1, thanks to Jan and Jack Askew for their strong support and for bringing all those wonderful desserts. Doug and Jan Anderson also did a lot of work and brought more food and wine!! Dianne and Roy Campbell came loaded with a big bowl of potato salad and entertained us throughout the day. Despite having a house full of family visiting, Bev Drake was there to help and ride on the float.

Max Russell brought props, food, and took on the big job of walking behind the float handing out candy. There was such a huge crowd at the parade that we ran out of candy half way, but the kids waved anyway.

Participating in the float increases awareness of our Club and how it helps our city. We want residents and businesses to know about us and certainly any newcomers in the crowd!

We had a blast, and are already talking about next year's float. We did see several members in the crowd and hoped you enjoyed the parade.

Summer Windup

Thanks to all that attended our wind-up pot luck on Sunday at Sybil Andrews Cottage. We had a wonderful time and beautiful weather with approximately 40 in attendance. A wonderful meal was enjoyed by all (thanks to everyone for their delicious dishes), also it was so nice to see everyone there. Afterwards we had a fire down on the beach where several people had their first taste of a Smore.

As well we watched the cruise ships sail by us; the passengers thinking how lucky we must be to live in such a beautiful location.

Fun and Learning

Our last meeting of the year was all about taking a better picture, and we had one of the best in the business show us how. Rob Paquin of Photo Tech gave us some instruction on simple Point and Shoot cameras, which most of us have. He assumed there were things on our cameras which we had no knowledge of how or when to use, and he was sure right.

My picture (top) is one I took bumping the ISO up to 1600, which was too much in this brightly lit room but a good experiment, none the less. The next one is also ISO 1600, but there was less light in the room. Next year there should be many more perfectly exposed pictures, no silhouettes and lots of action. RIGHT GIRLS?

Paint Project

There should be some very happy posies in Campbell River this year if the painted watering cans are any indication. Hopefully, we will have a finished project to show next week.

Hobbit Houses 2008

A group of Newcomers met at the Sybil Andrew's Cottage.

They came carrying bags of driftwood, moss, shells along with hammers, nails, glue guns, a saw and a drill with the intent to build wee Hobbit Houses.

Under the guidance of Carol and Vi , the group got the basic foundations completed and plan to do the finishing touches next week.

A Day at the Theatre

A small group have been gathering at the Sybil Andrew Cottage Monday evening at 7:00 to work on a Lazy Susan project that Vi Campbell was so good as to come up with as a project for the Newcomers Group. A Painting Project

Jan displays the finished project that is being offered in Vi's Tole painting class to be started soon. It is a table butler which can be purchased at a local store, and then sanded and painted with joyful little images. Great for condiments on the dining room table.

Make sure you let Vi know if you want to join this class which begins in April.
